3 Takeaways From the Seattle Torrent’s 4-1 Loss to the Frost – The Hockey Writers –

by Marcelo Moreira

On Friday, March 13, the Minnesota Frost hosted the Seattle Torrent for the two teams’ third meeting of the 2025-26 Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) season. The game started out strong for the Frost, as they scored two goals in the first 20 minutes. They increased their lead by another goal after 40 minutes of play.

The Torrent got on the board in the third with a power-play goal, but it was Frost who hit the empty net to walk away with a 4-1 win over Seattle.

Adzija Put the Torrent on the Board

By the third period, the Torrent were down by three goals. Six minutes into the final frame, the Frost’s Peyton Anderson took a seat for tripping.

With just a quarter of the power play remaining, Danielle Sercachny skated the puck through the neutral zone and up to the net. She took a shot, but Maddie Rooney made the initial save. While Rooney was sprawled out on the ice, Lexie Adzija skated up to collect the rebound and put it past the goal line. The goal was reviewed for goaltender interference, but it was deemed a good goal.

This goal marked Adzija’s fourth of the season. All of her points so far this season have been from goals. Despite her minus-6 rating, she has been a great offensive addition to the Torrent. Both she and Hannah Bilka are tied with four goals apiece this season. Only Julia Gosling, Jessie Eldridge, and Alex Carpenter sit above them in the standings. Adzija is getting closer to climbing the goal leaderboard.

Torrent Suffering From Injuries

In the first period, Jenna Buglioni went down hard into the boards, and there was no penalty called on Minnesota for it. Late in the second period, Mikyla Grant-Mentis was shoved into the boards by Britta Curl, and the officials were almost not going to call the penalty. When they realized she was slow to get up and needed help off the ice, the referee finally realized there should be some sort of penalty handed out.

When speaking to the media after the game, Adzija stated, “I think when dangerous plays aren’t called, you gotta protect yourself and you gotta protect your teammates. If those are called earlier in the game, I think you have a game that’s a lot more under control. Obviously, can’t control what the refs do. Gotta kinda work through that as a team. I think it’s just about the protection of the game.”

Grant-Mentis did not return to the game, and with an already hurting Seattle team, this is a tough break for them. They are already down Hilary Knight, and Bilka is out for the rest of the season. The Torrent have strong players, and they will need to dig deep to try and get some wins.

Torrent Kicked Off the Road Trip in the Worst Way

The Torrent were coming off a win in their last game, and a much-needed one at that. They hosted the Boston Fleet before hitting the road for four games.

When asked about Seattle’s current standings, head coach Steve O’Rourke stated, “It was one of the things we discussed tonight, just starting to try and stack some points on the road and get ahead of it. It’s a tough start to a road trip, but we got a next one up here, one o’clock on Sunday against Toronto, we’ll find ways to get points there.”

Yes, this was another tough break for Seattle, but their head coach is not worried about it and is instead looking forward to the next game. The Torrent are currently in last place with 19 points. The Vancouver Goldeneyes, the other expansion team this season, sits just above them with 20 points. The season’s end is drawing closer, but there are still plenty of chances for the Torrent to pick up more points and change their current course. Let’s hope the rest of the road trip goes well for them.

Torrent Back in Action on Sunday

The Torrent will have a quick turnaround and take on the Toronto Sceptres on Sunday, March 15.

The season series between the Frost and the Torrent will conclude on April 22 in Seattle.
