Logan Thompson secured his third shutout of the season, leading the Washington Capitals to a 4-0 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday night. Before the game, Alex Ovechkin addressed his playing status for next season, while the Capitals community was buzzing over the arrival of Ilya Protas for the final three contests of the regular season.
But Thompson provided the loudest statement in the crucial late-season win against the Maple Leafs to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Thompson Excellent in Road Win
Last night, Thompson wasn’t really tested by the Maple Leafs, but he made the saves when the team needed them. He made 21 stops for his ninth career shutout victory and set a new career-high (3) in a single season.
The 29-year-old goalie is 29-21-6 with a 2.47 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage this season, and he’s a massive reason the Capitals still have something to play for. They will close out 2025-26 with a home-and-home series against the Pittsburgh Penguins on April 11 and April 12, followed by the season finale in Columbus against the Blue Jackets on April 14.
With backup goalie Charlie Lindgren listed as day-to-day with an upper-body injury, Capitals fans can expect a heavy workload for Thompson over the final few contests. He is the easy choice for head coach Spencer Carbery if Washington continues to stack up wins this week. However, if they fall out of the race, Mitch Gibson could see some time between the pipes if Lindgren is unable to play this weekend.
Ovechkin Will Make His Decision on Playing Status This Summer
Early on Wednesday, the Capitals released a clip of Ovechkin’s interview segment on Caps Pregame Live on Monumental Sports Network, where he briefly chats about the most high-profile story heading into the offseason: his playing status for next season.
“When you love something, you do it with heart,” Ovechkin told radio broadcaster John Walton during the Capitals Pregame Live interview. “Obviously, I love playing hockey, and I love scoring goals. I’m going to make that decision in the summer.”
Ovechkin said there will be a discussion with his family, the Capitals ownership group (specifically owner Ted Leonsis), and his agents. Washington’s top-line winger is in the final year of a five-year, $47.5 million extension signed in July 2021.
Alex Ovechkin sat down with John Walton to discuss his plans to take time after the season to reflect and consult with his family before determining his future this summer.

Ovehckin will be 41 years old at the start of 2026-27, but there is little doubt Washington will hold a roster spot for the NHL’s all-time regular-season goal-scorer if he decides to play another season in the best league on the planet.
Ilya Protas Notches First Point in NHL Debut
Protas took his pregame rookie lap before joining his older brother (Aliaksei Protas) and Ovechkin at center ice for the opening faceoff in Toronto on Wednesday night. Washington’s captain has taken both Belarusian players under his wing since Aliaksei joined the organization in 2020-21.
“It was unbelievable,” Ilya said during his postgame interview. “When the boys read the starting lineup and hear starting (with) my brother, I was so nervous and shaky for a bit. It was special. I couldn’t believe it for a second. After that shift, kind of get into it and start focusing on my next shift.”
Ultimately, the younger Protas was paired with his brother and Tom Wilson and combined for a formidable line, registering a mammoth 700 pounds on the scale – Aliaksei (250 pounds), Ilya (225), and Wilson (225).
Ilya secured his first NHL assist on Cole Hutson’s empty-net tally to secure the 4-0 final score. He skated 19 shifts for 13:28 of ice time, registering two hits, and earning an eyebrow-raising 2:09 in power-play time. He also held his own at the faceoff dot with a 43% win rate (six wins and eight losses).

It was a solid debut for the 19-year-old forward as Carbery introduced the 6-foot-6 pivot into his lineup. After scoring 62 points in 66 games for the Hershey Bears in the American Hockey League (AHL) in 2025-26, another minor league stint this season seems unlikely after his late call-up to the Capitals.
Capitals Playoff Chances Listed Under 5%
The victory over Toronto gave Washington a 40-30-9 record for 89 points, putting the Capitals three points back of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference and Metropolitan Division. All the teams they are chasing, including the Philadelphia Flyers, third in the Metro, and the Ottawa Senators, second wild-card spot, both with 92 points, have a game in hand. Still, according to MoneyPuck, Washington is clinging to a 3.1% chance of making the playoffs with three games remaining.
In the Metro, Philadelphia has a 40-26-12 record and visits the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night before wrapping up a three-game road trip against the Winnipeg Jets on April 11. The Flyers finish the campaign with a back-to-back against a pair of playoff-bound teams at home on April 13 versus the Carolina Hurricanes and April 14 against the Montreal Canadiens. But Washington owns the tie-breaker over Philadelphia should it come down to that.
Ottawa has a 41-27-10 record, and they will finish the season starting with a home game tonight against the Florida Panthers before back-to-back games over the weekend against the New York Islanders on April 11 and the New Jersey Devils on April 12. Ottawa’s regular-season finale is on April 15 against the Maple Leafs. With one additional regulation win, Ottawa holds the tiebreaker over Washington for that final wild-card spot.
First and foremost, Washington will need to win their final three contests to keep pace with the Flyers and Senators. That would give them 95 points and an outside prayer of slipping into the postseason dance. The Capitals will need to consistently find the back of the net during the final week of the season if they want to see Ovechkin hit the ice for the playoffs at Capital One Arena this spring.
