On Wednesday, the New Jersey Devils announced that they have placed forward Marc McLaughlin on waivers, with the intent to activate and reassign him to the Utica Comets of the American Hockey League (AHL).Â
The 26-year-old has been out of commission all season long after suffering an upper-body injury during a preseason game against the New York Islanders. He returned to practice with the Devils in late December, but left the ice early.
New Jersey acquired McLaughlin from the Boston Bruins last March, and he rounded out the season with six assists across 16 games with the Comets. He was also called up to play with the Devils for two contests last season, where he recorded one assist.
McLaughlin re-signed with the Devils and agreed to a one-year, two-way deal in July 2025, earning $775,000 at the NHL level and $350,000 at the AHL level.
Now that he has been activated off of Long-Term Injured Reserve, there is a chance that he could be back in action with the Comets soon. In the past, he’s been recognized for his gritty play, leading with his net-front presence and two-way game.
Now, the Devils have three players left on injured reserve: Luke Hughes, Zack MacEwen, and Stefan Noesen. As of right now, all of their timelines to return are uncertain.
As the Winter Olympic break continues, teams are permitted to place players on waivers, but are not allowed to trade anyone until after the NHL roster freeze ends on Feb. 22. For all the latest news across the NHL, be sure to follow The Hockey Writers.
