New York Sirens’ 2025-26 Midseason Check-In – The Hockey Writers – PWHL

by Marcelo Moreira

The Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) is about to start up again after the month-long Olympic break. 61 of their incredible athletes competed in the Olympics to try and help their home country bring home the gold. With the PWHL season starting again, let’s check in with the New York Sirens’ current state after the first half of the season.

Kaltounkova Proving Why She Was Selected First Overall

For the second consecutive season, the Sirens finished last, earning them the first overall pick in the entry draft. In 2024, they selected Sarah Fillier, and she proved to be a valuable asset to the team. The Sirens selected Kristyna Kaltounkova first overall in the 2025 PWHL Draft. She made history before she even stepped foot on the ice by becoming the first European player selected first overall.

On the ice, she has been stellar. In 16 games, she has recorded 12 points, 11 of which are goals. She currently has three games in which she has scored two goals. She hasn’t recorded her first hat trick yet, but given her current performance, she is sure to achieve it soon.

Kaltounkova’s 11 goals not only lead the Sirens, but she also leads the league. She is one ahead of Minnesota Frost’s Kendall Coyne Schofield, who has 10. Kaltounkova’s rookie presence has been impressive, and she still has 14 more games to show what she is capable of this season.

Sirens Already Have Two Players With a Hat Trick

While Kaltounkova hasn’t recorded her first hat trick yet, two players have already this season.

Taylor Girard stepped into her third PWHL season and made a splash. She opened the season on Nov. 22, scoring three goals against the Ottawa Charge to start the Sirens off on a strong note. This was the first hat trick of her PWHL career. In just 13 games, she has recorded six points, which ties her career-high point total so far.

On Dec. 28, the Sirens took on the Seattle Torrent in Dallas, Texas. This was a historic game, as it was the first PWHL game in the south, and it was also the first game in which Casey O’Brien scored a goal. However, she didn’t stop there and scored two more, scoring her first goal and her first hat trick in the same game. In her first season, she already has 11 points in her first 16 games. She is just under Kaltounkova and has had a stellar start to her first PWHL season.

Osborne Has Stepped Up to the Task of Starting Goaltender

The Sirens’ rookies have been flourishing, but so have their veterans. During the PWHL Expansion Draft, Seattle selected Corinne Schroeder, the Sirens’ starting goaltender for the last two seasons. On top of this, their other veteran goaltender, Abbey Levy, signed with the Boston Fleet during the offseason. Kayle Osborne was the Sirens’ rookie goalie last season, playing in ten games and earning a record of 2-4-0-3.

This season, you wouldn’t be able to tell that Osborne was never a starting goaltender. Of the Sirens’ 16 games, she has played in 15 of them. Her current save percentage (SV%) is .921, and she has a goals-against average (GAA) of 2.21.

Osborne has played in every game except one and has stepped up to the challenge in each and every one. She hasn’t wavered and has even recorded three shutouts already. She is an exceptional goaltender, which fans could already see last season. However, this season has really brought out her potential. It’s great that she can consistently play at such a high level, but the Sirens now know they can rely on rookie Callie Shanahan if needed, too.

Sirens Sitting in a Playoff Spot

Since the PWHL follows a different point system and instead goes by the 3-2-1-0 rule, a lot can change at any moment. At this current moment, before play resumes for the remainder of the 2025-26 PWHL season, the Sirens are sitting in a playoff spot. They are currently in fourth place with 24 points. They sit just below the Montreal Victoire with 27 points and just above the Ottawa Charge with 22 points.

There are still 14 more games in the regular season for the Sirens, but at the moment, they are looking favorable. They are the only original six PWHL team to not make the postseason. Could the 2025-26 season change that?

Sirens Take to Home Ice on Feb. 26

The Sirens will play the first game back from the Olympic break on Thursday, Feb. 26, when they host the Victoire.
