Maybe you saw the news late last night, but in case you missed it, the Anaheim Ducks and Washington Capitals linked up on a late-night trade that sent longtime Capital John Carlson to Orange County. Here are the full details of the trade:
Ducks receive:
Capitals receive:
- Conditional 1st-round pick
- 2027 3rd-round pick
There’s always one or two trades every deadline that no one sees coming, and this is certainly one of them. Carlson had not been in the rumor mill at any point. Either way, it’s quite the shakeup. The Ducks have needed a right-handed shot on their blue line this season, and the Capitals get a first-round pick as they appear to enter sell mode.
Ducks Address Their Biggest Need
Before the trade, the Ducks were icing a right side of Jacob Trouba, Radko Gudas, and Ian Moore. Trouba has had a fine season, but Gudas has fallen off and is playing a role above his paygrade at this point in his career. That’s why Carlson should give the Ducks a significant boost to their top four.

There was a point a few years ago when it appeared Carlson was in decline, but he’s back to being one of the best two-way defensemen in the NHL, even though he’s in his mid-30s. His offensive game is his strength. He’s one of the better shooting defensemen in the NHL, and he’s a good playmaker and passer.
Carlson’s passing ability shines from the defensive zone, where he’s highly efficient at breaking out the puck through his passing; just don’t expect him to do it with his skating. In addition to having a good shot, he’s also a volume shooter.
It’s not just about offense with Carlson, either. His defensive game is quite sound as well. He defends dump and chase well and generally wins puck battles on defensive zone retrievals. The one area of concern is his rush defense, which has fallen off a bit this season.
Still, there’s no denying that Carlson should be a massive upgrade for the right side of the Ducks’ blue line. He immediately fits in on their top pair, and he pushes Trouba and Gudas down the lineup, which should make them more effective in lesser roles that will better suit them.
Credit to Ducks general manager Pat Verbeek for taking a swing that no one expected. The Ducks are one point out of the division lead in the Pacific and look like a good bet to make the playoffs. Carlson upgrades their biggest need and should help them solidify their playoff spot.

Capitals With a Shocker
I don’t think anyone could have imagined the Capitals trading Carlson, even though he will be an unrestricted free agent this summer. He seemed like the type of player who would be a Capital for life. Perhaps he re-signs there during the offseason and finishes his career where it started, but the Capitals will have to find a replacement for him if they don’t.
That won’t be the easiest, given the UFA market this summer, but the Capitals have shown they’re not afraid to make savvy moves to improve their roster. Getting the conditional first for Carlson could help them swing a deal for another top-four defender this offseason, perhaps someone like Dougie Hamilton if the New Jersey Devils don’t move him by today’s trade deadline.
The Capitals’ return for Carlson may seem a bit light, considering what other defensemen have gone for leading up to the trade deadline, but they did fine. A first has value on the trade market, and I’d have to imagine that’s how they plan to eventually use that pick, since they’re still playoff contenders in the Metro.
