The Minnesota Wild had another interesting week, and this time it involved the trade deadline. No, they didn’t make any blockbusters, as everyone has found out by now, but they did make several smaller moves that impacted the team. The Wild brought in several new players, but they also let a couple move on as well.
The Wild just ended the week with a road shootout loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday afternoon, Mar. 8. They’ll have four games this week, with all of them at home now that they have their arena back following the boys’ state hockey tournament. Here are a couple of storylines to watch for the week of Mar. 9 – Mar. 16.
Wild’s Trade Deadline Recapped
Some may be disappointed by the Wild’s moves because they didn’t bring in another player at the level of Quinn Hughes. They did bring in a center with quite a bit of size in Michael McCarron, and he’s already made a bit of an impact on the roster with a goal in his debut game. It wasn’t just an ordinary goal either; he was screening in front and tipped a shot while reaching around another player.
They brought in Robby Fabbri and Bobby Brink, both of whom are speedy forwards who will provide depth. The Wild continued to add more depth, but on the defensive side, with the addition of defenseman Jeff Petry. Depth was the main reason behind these moves, but there was one more that made the biggest news, and that was Nick Foligno.
It surprised many throughout the league, and it also gave Nick a chance to surprise his brother Marcus. He brings a lot of leadership, and although the Wild do have a lot of leaders, more experience is always good. The two players they let go were Vinnie Hinostroza and David Jiříček; both had their moments for the Wild, but it was time to let them move on to other teams.
Wild’s Boldy Still Hot
The Wild had a bit of a rough start when they came back from the Olympic break, but they turned it around rather quickly, and Matt Boldy has been a big part of that as he has all season. He’s been hot on Kirill Kaprizov’s trail the whole season, and he’s only four points behind him currently.

Boldy had a strong Olympic presence as he scored early on and then again in the gold medal game, and that performance has followed him back to the NHL. Although the Wild didn’t get the win, he did have a goal in their shootout loss to the Avalanche as he pulled one of his signature moves. It’ll be interesting to see if he can continue on this pace and hit the 50-goal mark before the end of the regular season.
