NHL Rumours: Hurricanes Goalies, Binnington, Robertson & Greer’s Malicious Hit – The Hockey Writers – NHL Rumors

by Marcelo Moreira

In today’s NHL rumour rundown, we start with the Carolina Hurricanes and their comfort level with their goaltenders, which includes a conversation about St. Louis Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington. Next, we head to the Dallas Stars and what the future may hold for them with Jason Robertson. Finally, we end with A.J. Greer and the looming consequences following a dangerous hit on Calgary Flames forward Connor Zary.

Hurricanes Like Their Goalies, Checked in on Binnington

The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun had a conversation with the Hurricanes’ general manager, Eric Tulsky, and the conversation about goaltending came up. (from After trade deadline ‘disappointment,’ can this still be the Carolina Hurricanes’ year?, The Athletic, Mar. 20, 2026)

Tulsky told LeBrun, “We’ve got two goalies that we’re comfortable with and a third goalie who is working to come back in time to help for the playoffs…so again, we’re always going to be looking for opportunities to get better.”

He added that if there was an opportunity to acquire a top-five goalie, he would have done the work on that.

One goaltender rumoured to be chased by the Hurricanes was Binnington, but whether it was the Blues’ asking price or if it was their level of confidence in his abilities, they didn’t do much more than check in on him, according to LeBrun.

Frederik Anderson and Brandon Bussi have backstopped the Hurricanes to an Eastern Conference-leading 44-19-6 record through 69 games. Pyotr Kochetkov has been recovering from a hip surgery he had in December of 2025, but as Tulsky indicated, he may be healthy come playoff time.

Anderson is sporting a 12-11-5 record and a career-low save percentage of .872, while Bussi is having an excellent rookie season with a record of 26-6-1 with a save percentage of .896.

The team plays very well defensively and sits second in the league in shot suppression, allowing just 24.3 shots against per game.

Despite the sub-.900 save percentage from both goalies, their average goals against is still below 3.00, which is the standard for a successful team.

Stars Still Planning Extension for Jason Robertson

Over the past year or so, there have been questions about the future of Robertson with the Stars. General manager Jim Nill has stated in the past that the plan was for them to keep him, and reiterated this on Mar. 16 on NHL Tonight’s First Shift.

Robertson has been dominant since breaking into the league, and he is on pace to push for his second 100-point season. He is going to push for 45 goals again, and especially with the injuries the Stars have faced in their forward group, notably the absence of Mikko Rantanen, he has been the driving force as they look to contend for the Presidents’ Trophy over the last few weeks of the season.

There aren’t many players as talented as Robertson is, but as the final season of his contract winds down, and with only one more season of restricted free agent rights, the Stars are going to have to decide if they want a long-term deal or look at moving him.

Everybody seems happy with the way things have gone between the team and the player so far. Bringing in Rantanen and giving him a massive deal has constricted the Stars’ cap situation, and they may need to get creative if they want to give him what he deserves.

They are projected to have just over $14 million in cap space this offseason, and with Robertson, Michael Bunting, Jamie Benn, Mavrik Bourque, and multiple other depth players, they are going to have tough decisions to make.

Robertson will be saying that there is no reason he shouldn’t make at least as much as Rantanen, considering the similar offensive output and stronger defensive abilities.

Panthers’ Greer Delivers Malicious Hit Against Flames’ Zary

During the third period of the Panthers’ 4-1 loss to the Flames, Greer had caught Zary with a hold, and had him a bit off balance, and as Greer followed Zary into the corner, he gave a strong two-hand push on the lower back of the Flames forward, sending him into the footing of the boards head-first.

As the Sportsnet broadcast described the play as nothing else besides intent to injure, Greer will likely be facing a hearing for his dangerous play.

The NHL Department of Player Safety has been at the forefront of conversations for multiple reasons over the past few weeks. The major headline was regarding the suspension given to Radko Gudas, being only five games. After that, while they weren’t directly involved, there was an exchange at the general managers’ meeting which saw Tulsky and Gary Bettman exchange words regarding head injuries.

There is a very strong chance that Greer will receive an in-person hearing, meaning the suspension can exceed the five-game mark.
