NHL Rumors: McMann Extension, Rielly Trade, and Why Fire Cassidy? – The Hockey Writers – NHL Rumors

by Syndicated News

In today’s NHL rumors rundown, the Vegas Golden Knights have made a shocking coaching change. What led to Cassidy’s release, and why John Tortorella? Meanwhile, the Toronto Maple Leafs continue to swirl in speculation, and Seattle Kraken forward Bobby McMann is rapidly boosting his value.

With the regular season winding down, teams across the league are making bold decisions that could shape both playoff races and offseason plans.

Golden Knights Make Stunning Coaching Change

In one of the most surprising moves of the season, Vegas fired head coach Bruce Cassidy and replaced him with John Tortorella. Cassidy, who led the franchise to a Stanley Cup in 2023, still had one year remaining on his contract. With only eight games remaining in a season where the Golden Knights were still in the playoff conversation, the timing was unexpected.

General manager Kelly McCrimmon praised Cassidy’s contributions but made it clear the move was about urgency. Vegas is making a last-ditch push to salvage its season, and while late coaching changes like this are extremely rare, Vegas is known to be aggressive.

Cassidy Exit Tied to Deeper Issues

According to Elliotte Friedman, the writing had been on the wall for Cassidy for some time. While the timing caught many off guard, insiders suggest internal issues had been building, dating back to last season.

A reported tense meeting before a playoff game against the Edmonton Oilers may have been a turning point in Cassidy’s relationship with his players. Although management initially backed the coach, it became evident this season that his message was no longer resonating. Cassidy’s demanding approach may have worn thin over time. Ultimately, Vegas determined that a new voice was needed, especially with playoff hopes still alive.

Tortorella brings a wealth of experience, including a Stanley Cup win in 2004. However, he too has a demanding style, and it raises questions about how quickly players can adapt. Friedman said, “…it’s not like we’re going to Santa Claus from Bruce Cassidy here, it’s very different, so you know, I think look like when you make the change this late in the year, you don’t have a lot of options.”

Maple Leafs Rumors Continue to Build

The Toronto Maple Leafs remain at the center of speculation. One name to watch is defenseman Morgan Rielly, who has once again emerged in trade discussions. Reports suggest he has long been of interest to teams like the San Jose Sharks.

TSN’s Craig Button suggests that, given his recent struggles and current contract, Rielly may need to take initiative if change is on the table. Button said, “I’m going to use a recent example. You handle it like the Chicago Blackhawks handled Seth Jones. Morgan Rielly may need to take initiative and say, ‘A change is going to benefit everybody here, me and the organization.’ Seth took control of his situation, saying, ‘Hey, I need a change.’ I’m not saying Morgan should say that exactly, but being honest with himself and the team would help the process move forward.”

Nothing has changed regarding Rielly’s contract status. He’s still got control over whether he’s traded and where he’d go.

Bobby McMann Raising Value in Seattle

Since joining the Seattle Kraken, McMann has been on a tear, recording seven goals and four assists in just eight games. His direct, physical style and ability to finish have quickly made him a key contributor.

The Kraken have already expressed interest in extending the 29-year-old, and his recent performance is driving up his market value. What once looked like a modest contract projection has now shifted into the $3–4 million range annually, depending on term. “I don’t think it’s gone very far down the road yet, but (I’m under the impression that the Kraken have indicated to McMann that they would like to try and keep him,” Friedman said.

McMann looks like a natural fit.
