Rankings
Slovakia’s pipeline to the NHL has produced names like Juraj Slafkovsky and Simon Nemec in recent drafts, and Lucian Bernat could be next in line as a late-round find with long-term upside. The 6-foot-4 right winger from Bratislava is spending his draft year with Tappara U20 in Finland’s U20 SM-sarja, where he has posted 15 goals and 16 assists for 31 points in 37 games (0.84 points per game).
Bernat is a rare combination of size and skill at the junior level. Listed by Elite Prospects as a “Cerebral Tactician,” “Sniper,” and “Two-Way Forward,” he carries a toolkit that typically does not coexist in one player at 17 years old. He reads defensive structures quickly, positions himself in shooting lanes before the puck arrives, and has a release that catches goalies off-guard from mid-range. His shot selection is mature. He does not force plays from low-percentage areas, instead circling back and resetting when the first option closes.
His skating is advanced for a player his size. He generates good speed through his first three strides and sustains it through the neutral zone, covering ground efficiently with a long stride. His edgework in tight spaces is where you see the Finnish development influence. Playing in Tappara’s system since his U18 days has sharpened his ability to cut inside off the boards and protect the puck through contact, using his reach and frame rather than brute force.
Bernat’s puck handling in traffic stands out on film. He keeps his head up through congested areas, manipulates the puck into his hip to shield from pressure, and executes give-and-go sequences at pace. When he gets the puck on his forehand along the right half-wall, he is dangerous. He can wire a one-timer, walk to the slot for a wrister, or thread a cross-seam pass with equal conviction.

Defensively, Bernat is not a passenger. He backchecks with purpose, uses his stick length to disrupt passing lanes, and plays a reliable 200-foot game. Tappara’s structured Finnish system demands positional discipline, and he has internalized those habits. That two-way reliability is part of what drew the Owen Sound Attack to select him in the second round (75th overall) of the 2025 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Import Draft. He chose to remain in Finland for his draft year rather than report to the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), a decision that keeps him developing against older competition in a pro-style environment.
On the international stage, Bernat represented Slovakia at the 2025 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, where scouting reports described him as one of the most dominant puck carriers in the tournament. Slovakia’s program is building momentum with draft-eligible talent spread across Finland, the OHL, the United States Hockey League (USHL), and Czech leagues, and Bernat sits near the top of that group. He is expected to be a key piece for Slovakia at the 2026 IIHF U18 World Championship, which will be held on home soil in Trenčín and Bratislava.
NHL Draft Projection
Bernat’s ranking trajectory has been climbing. NHL Central Scouting listed him with a “C” rating on their preliminary watch list (projecting rounds four through six) before bumping him to 35th among European skaters at midterm. Mock drafts have placed him anywhere from the third round to the fifth, depending on the evaluator. His production in the U20 SM-sarja is solid, and the upcoming U18 Worlds on home ice represent a significant opportunity to push his stock higher.
The combination of size (6-foot-4), right-shot orientation, shooting ability, skating, and two-way habits gives him a profile that NHL teams covet in the middle rounds. Players with that frame who also process the game at his speed tend to take big developmental leaps between ages 18 and 21.
Strengths
- Excellent size (6-foot-4, 198 pounds) with fluid skating for his frame
- High-end shot with a quick, deceptive release
- Strong puck protection and handling in traffic
- Mature defensive habits built in Finland’s structured system
- Right-shot winger, a position of scarcity at the NHL level
- Intelligent off-puck positioning and lane awareness
Under Construction
- Production has been inconsistent at times, particularly over his last 10 games (two points in 10)
- Needs to add strength to sustain board battles against pro-level competition
- Has not yet been tested at the Liiga (top Finnish league) level
- Translating his game from the U20 league to North American ice dimensions remains unknown
NHL Potential
Bernat projects as a middle-six winger who can contribute on the power play and kill penalties. His size, shot, and hockey sense create a realistic path to becoming a secondary scoring option at the NHL level. The Finnish development track record for players in Tappara’s system is strong, and his willingness to stay in that environment rather than jump to the CHL speaks to a patient development mindset. He is not a player who will step into an NHL lineup next season, but his ceiling is real if his frame fills out and his shot translates against better goaltending.
