One day, David Lewandowski might give Edmonton hockey fans a lot to cheer about. On Monday (April 6), however, the Saskatoon Blades forward broke their hearts.
Lewandowski, an Edmonton Oilers prospect, had a goal and assisted on the game-winner in overtime to help Saskatoon defeat the Edmonton Oil Kings by a score of 3-2 in Game 7 of the Western Hockey League (WHL) Playoffs first round at Rogers Place.
During a Blades power play in sudden death, Lewandowski fired a shot from the point that teammate Rowan Calvert deflected past Edmonton goaltender Parker Snell, propelling Saskatoon into the second round of the playoffs. The Blades will face the Prince Albert Raiders in a best-of-seven series beginning Friday (April 10).
Saskatoon’s victory was a shocking upset, given the Blades finished 20 points behind Edmonton in the 2025-26 WHL standings. But if there was any solace for Edmonton fans to find in defeat, it was in the performance of Lewandowski.
Lewandowski Racks Up 8 Points vs Oil Kings
Lewandowski finished Round 1 with a team-high eight points, from three goals and five assists. After being held pointless in Game 1, Lewandowski erupted for three goals and five assists over the final six games.
The Blades forward was especially explosive at Rogers Place, where he scored twice and added four assists in four games, making himself right at home in the arena that he hopes to eventually call home.
Oilers Drafted Lewandowski in Round 4 Last Year
The Oilers selected Lewandowski in the fourth round of the 2025 NHL Entry Draft in Los Angeles, using the 117th pick to draft the left-shot winger from Dusseldorf, Germany.
It was a bit of a surprise that Edmonton was able to select Lewandowski that late in the draft: He had been largely projected as a third-round pick, ranked anywhere from 69th to 86th by leading sources.
With that in mind, some felt that Lewandowski could ultimately prove to be one of the steals of the 2025 NHL Draft. Now, less than a year later, there is greater evidence that the Oilers made out like bandits in Round 4 last June.
Lewandowski Had Great Regular Season With Blades
Lewandowski had a breakout season with Saskatoon in 2025-26, recording 17 goals and 48 assists while averaging a team-best 1.17 points per game, after totalling 15 goals and 24 assists while averaging 0.75 points per game in 2024-25.

The Blades forward was a model of consistency during the regular season, never going more than three games in a row without a point, while authoring four separate streaks of at least five straight games with at least one point.
Lewandowski was held pointless just three times in a 26-game span from Jan. 14 to March 18, cranking his game up after returning from the 2026 World Junior Championship in Minnesota. He was one of Germany’s top performers at the World Juniors, tying for third on the team with four points.
Lewandowski Could Have Future With Oilers
The Oilers already have a couple of German forwards on their roster, forwards Leon Draisaitl and Josh Samanski. Samanski, 24, just made his NHL debut this season, while Draisaitl is long established as one of the top centres in hockey.
Lewandowski, who will almost certainly be back in the WHL next season, has quite a way to go before he joins them. But if the 19-year-old winger continues to progress at his current rate, he could be in the NHL sooner than usual for a fourth-round draft pick. And with Draisaitl signed through the end of the 2032-33 season, there could be at least a few seasons of a German connection in Edmonton.
