4 Takeaways From Sirens’ 3-2 Comeback Win Over Sceptres – The Hockey Writers – New York Sirens

by Syndicated News

On Wednesday, April 15, the New York Sirens hosted the Toronto Sceptres for the two teams’ third matchup of the 2025-26 Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) season. Heading into the season series, each team had one win under their belt. The Sirens had home ice advantage for their final home game of the season.

The first period saw back-and-forth action between the two teams, with no change in the score. The Sceptres changed that in the second period with a shorthanded goal from Daryl Watts. Eight minutes into the third, the Sceptres scored again to take a two-goal lead.

Less than a minute later, the Sirens were on the board to cut Toronto’s lead down to one goal. A power-play goal five minutes later tied the game, and the Sirens scored again shortly after to take the lead. With no other change in score, the Sirens took the 3-2 win.

Krizova Scored Her First with the Sirens

The Sirens were down by two with 10 minutes left in the third period. Allyson Simpson had the puck and tried to make a play with Elle Hartje, but Raygan Kirk made the initial save. Clair DeGeorge picked up the loose puck and passed it down to Denisa Krizova. She shot the puck into the wide space Kirk allowed and put the Sirens on the board.

This goal was Krizova’s second of the season, but her first with the Sirens. At the trade deadline, the Sirens traded Jincy Roese to the Minnesota Frost in exchange for Krizova. She recorded her first assist with New York in their last game and now has two points in two games. The Sirens wanted to add an offensive threat at the deadline; Krizova has demonstrated she was the right choice for New York.

The Sirens had five power-play chances in this game, and it wasn’t until the final one that they finally found success. Sarah Fillier received the puck at the blue line from Casey O’Brien, but Fillier immediately passed it back to her. O’Brien took the shot, but Kirk made the save. Maja Nylen Persson picked up the rebound and put it into the net to tie the game.

The Sirens struggled on the power play throughout the entire game, even allowing a jailbreak goal for the Sceptres, but they managed to bring it back on their last power-play chance of the night. When Nylen Persson was asked how her season is going, she stated, “For me, every time I am put on the ice, I want to make the most out of it. I want to be a player to trust in every situation when I’m out there. I’m going to do everything for the team.”

This goal was Nylen Persson’s second of the season and now brings her point total to 10. She has surpassed her previous career-high of eight points already and continues to excel, both offensively and defensively.

Fillier Notched Her 50th Point

Fillier’s secondary assist on Nylen-Persson’s goal brings her to the exclusive 50-point club. She is the 15th player to reach 50 points in the PWHL and the first on the Sirens to do so. Fillier is also the first from the 2025 PWHL Draft class to reach 50 points; all the other players who have done so have played in all three PWHL seasons.

Even with a slower start to this season compared to the previous one, Fillier has been outstanding for the Sirens. She currently has 21 points on the season in 26 games. She continues to elevate her performance in every game.

Sirens Aren’t Out of the Playoff Race Just Yet

With their win in this game, the Sirens have now jumped to fifth place in the standings. The Sceptres have been bumped down to sixth. Both teams have 34 points, but because New York has an additional overtime win over Toronto, the Sirens are in fifth place. The Ottawa Charge still sit above both of them with 36 points.

Only two points separate New York and Toronto from Ottawa. Every team has three games left, so the possibility of the playoffs is not out of the realm of possibility for New York. The Sirens’ next two games are also against the Charge and the Sceptres, respectively. These two games are must-wins for New York if they want to make it to the postseason for the first time.

Sirens Hit the Road

The Sirens will head north to Ottawa to take on the Charge on Saturday, April 18.
