The sweep against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The win in the bubble against the Toronto Maple Leafs. In a quarter century of Columbus Blue Jackets hockey, that is it when it comes to postseason series wins for this franchise.

The 2025-26 season was supposed to be different. Everyone in the Blue Jackets’ organization from ownership on down believed this team was good enough to break their five-year playoff drought. From the outset of the season, everyone declared the expectations were to make the playoffs.

But yet, here we are again in an all too familiar place. The Blue Jackets have once again failed to qualify for the playoffs for now a sixth-consecutive season. This season was more brutal than the previous five given the level of expectation the team placed on themselves.

Despite at one point with around a month to go in the season having around an 80% chance to make the playoffs, the Blue Jackets stumbled down the stretch when the games got harder. They played themselves out of the playoffs thanks to their own, self-inflicted wounds.

The Blue Jackets went 0-5-1 in their last six games at home this season. That mark was one of the worst home stretches in franchise history. It proved to be a fitting end to one of the most frustrating seasons in team history.

While the Blue Jackets have now held their exit interviews and dispersed for the offseason with several months to consider what went wrong, the loyal fans find themselves going through more of the same. The season ended in April with almost six months until they get to see their favorite team take the ice again.

Fans Reach Breaking Point

The sad reality of this situation is that this is all Blue Jackets’ fans know. Promises of better days. Empty words in the offseason from the team portraying hope for the future. It’s been the same cycle now for 25 years.

Only this time, many fans have had enough. While some fans have had enough prior to this season, the way the 2025-26 season ended was a gut shot to many who believed their Blue Jackets were finally good enough to make it over the playoff hump.

The bump they got from head coach Rick Bowness took them from last in the East to a solid playoff spot with three weeks to go. While that’s great and all, the team shouldn’t have been in last place to start with. A team with playoff aspirations should never flirt with last place let alone achieve that result.

Still, the Blue Jackets managed to take the league by storm when Bowness came in. They played better. They got timely scoring. They got much better defense and solid goaltending. It looked and felt promising.

Then it hit them. Reality. Starting with the game against the New York Islanders where the Blue Jackets were the better team, they lost 1-0. While they rallied for a win in Philadelphia two nights later, the wheels came off for good after that.

The Blue Jackets were the better team against the Canadiens. They lost 2-1. They allowed the Sharks to win late in regulation after being dominated at home. They built a 3-0 lead at home over the Bruins before imploding in the third period. The Hurricanes crushed them in consecutive games. They could do nothing all night against the Jets at home. You get the picture yet?

When it mattered the most, the Blue Jackets wilted. But the troubling part of this was not just the fact that this collapse happened. The same issues that led to this collapse were many of the same issues from earlier in the season, mainly third-period collapses and then their inability to do anything on special teams.

So what’s the issue here? The Blue Jackets blew third-period leads under Dean Evason. They eventually did too under Bowness. While there were reasons Evason was let go, the fact remains these Blue Jackets have several issues they must address if they want to be a playoff team.

Here’s the problem though. Fans are fed up. They don’t want to hear that right now. They’ve already put up with 25 years of misery that have some questioning whether or not they want to renew their season tickets or even spend any money on them. At this point, who could blame them? Costs are going up but the team hasn’t given them any incentive to invest in them. Let me try to paint a picture of just how miserable things have been.

Recapping Bad History

Forget the idea that the Blue Jackets have never won a division title. They have yet to even finish second in franchise history in their division. SECOND. In the season the Blue Jackets won 16 in a row, they finished third behind the Penguins and Capitals. They were bounced in the first round by the Penguins that season.

No Blue Jacket has ever recorded 90 points in a season. Currently, Artemi Panarin holds the franchise record for points in a season with 87. In 25 years? What’s going on with draft and develop here? While other teams are able to produce 90 and 100-point scorers, the Blue Jackets continue to search for their first.

Zach Werenski got to 81 points this season and is considered a strong Norris candidate. Now consider this. He led team scoring by 14 points over Kirill Marchenko. No Blue Jacket forward was inside the top-50 in points this season.

These Blue Jackets certainly have some good pieces to work with on the team. But where is their elite-point scorer at? Adam Fantilli may get there eventually. But what about now? The team is still paying for their failures of past years. Again, draft and develop. The very thing that is paramount in today’s NHL it seems the Blue Jackets are lagging behind on.

Now do you see why fans are at a breaking point? At the end of the day, the results continue to not be there. It’s the same quotes that come from the end of season availabilities that also don’t excite fans because failed seasons is all they know. Here’s Werenski from his exit interview this week.

“We appreciate the support. It’s been incredible this year,” Werenski said. “I know that’s not what fans want to hear. That’s honestly not what I want to be saying right now. I wish I was saying that we were getting ready to talk about the playoffs. But in saying that, it goes a long way to have the support of the fans here. We feel sorry about how it ended and we feel terrible about it. I mean, this is the worst I’ve ever felt leaving a season.”

“I’m going to do everything I can in the next few weeks and over the summer to reflect on it and become a better hockey player and better leader, better person and hopefully try and not let stuff life this happen again. We appreciate everything. It’s an incredible place to play. Never gets lost to me wearing that jersey. Obviously, done it for 10 years now. It’s special every time. But it wasn’t good enough. And we’re going to look at ourselves in the mirror and figure it out.”

Just More of the Same

There are loyal fan bases. And then there is the Blue Jackets’ fan base. It doesn’t get any more loyal than that. They continue to support their team despite repeated failures and the same mistakes happening for a quarter century. Players have come and gone. Coaches and management have come and gone. But it’s the same results.

Why do you think many fans supported the postgame tirade Bowness had after the Capitals game? They have been waiting for someone to say those words on the record for years. Something needed to be said. In their minds, it was long overdue.

What has been going on for 25 years with this hockey team is completely unacceptable. Even in an era where parody around the NHL is king, the Blue Jackets continue to lag behind. While there will always be those that will support the team no matter what, some have had enough.

The 2025-26 season was one that saw the Blue Jackets become the darlings of the NHL in trying to recover from last place. They gave their fans hope that this season was going to be different. Except it turned out to be the same as most of the others.

The Blue Jackets failed this season. There’s no sugar coating that. It has fans questioning if they should spend their hard-earned money investing in this team. Until the team can prove things will be different, it’s a fair question for fans to consider.

One of the worst things a team can have within their fanbase is the feeling of apathy and indifference. That would mean they don’t care anymore. Many fans have reached that point given the collapse of the 2025-26 season.

Bowness signed on again because he believes he can help the Blue Jackets get to the playoffs. GM Don Waddell believes his team will get there eventually. The players believe they have what it takes although they didn’t show that at the end of this season. They believe Bowness can help them get over the hump.

While that’s all fine and dandy in words, actions are needed. The Blue Jackets need to use the 2026-27 season and beyond to start building trust back with many of their fans who are feeling indifferent these days.

In a results-oriented business, winning matters. The Blue Jackets haven’t done enough of it. They have no one to blame but themselves.

The 2025-26 version of the Blue Jackets ultimately became a breaking point for many fans. It will go down as one of the most frustrating seasons ever for everyone involved. It will now be up to the team to find a way to bring real hope and excitement for future seasons.

How they will do that is anyone’s guess at this point. The Blue Jackets haven’t done enough to earn the trust of the fans. They’ve had more than enough time to do that too.

Until there are real, tangible results in the form of consistent trips to the playoffs and a run at the Stanley Cup, the Blue Jackets will have to deal with the question if their fans can trust anything they say or do right now. That’s how bitter the taste the end of this season was.
