For years, one of the biggest questions surrounding the Edmonton Oilers has centred around Connor McDavid‘s long-term future. As the face of the franchise and arguably the best player in the world, speculation about whether he will spend his entire career in Edmonton has become a yearly topic.
Those discussions resurfaced recently after Oilers insider Bob Stauffer appeared on Sportsnet 590 The Fan and offered a very optimistic outlook on McDavid’s future with the organization. “I don’t think there’s anybody more committed to Edmonton than Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl… I expect the next contract to be a seven-year extension.”
While McDavid is only entering the first year of his two-year extension window, discussions are already beginning to focus on what comes next. Given Stauffer’s close ties to the Oilers organization, his comments carry more weight than most speculation or opinions circulating around the league.
There are plenty of analysts and commentators who speculate about McDavid’s future, but Stauffer occupies a different category.
As the longtime host of Oilers Now and someone with close ties to the organization, Stauffer has built a reputation as one of the most connected voices around the Oilers. While he is not speaking on behalf of management or McDavid, his comments often provide insight into the level of confidence within the organization.
His latest remarks should give Oilers fans hope.
The expectation from many outside observers has been that if McDavid ever leaves Edmonton, it would be because the organization failed to surround him with a championship-caliber team. Stauffer’s confidence suggests there is still a strong belief that both McDavid and Leon Draisaitl remain fully invested in what the Oilers are trying to accomplish.
McDavid Has Never Hidden His Desire to Win in Edmonton
One reason Stauffer’s comments resonate is because they align with everything McDavid has said publicly throughout his career.
Since arriving in Edmonton as the first overall pick in 2015, McDavid has consistently spoken about wanting to bring a Stanley Cup back to the city. Despite years of rebuilding and several disappointing playoff exits, he has never publicly expressed frustration with Edmonton or hinted that he wants to leave. Instead, his message has always remained remarkably consistent. He wants to win. More importantly, he wants to win with the Oilers.
That mindset has been shared by Draisaitl as well. Together, the two superstars have established themselves as one of the most dominant duos in modern hockey. They have experienced highs and lows together, and both players have repeatedly talked about their desire to finish what they started in Edmonton.
Their commitment has never appeared to be the issue. The question has always been whether the organization can deliver a championship around them.
The Next Two Seasons Could Define Everything
As encouraging as Stauffer’s comments may be, there is still an important reality facing the Oilers. Nothing is guaranteed.
McDavid has already accomplished nearly everything an individual player can achieve. He owns multiple Hart Trophies, Art Ross Trophies, Ted Lindsay Awards, and scoring titles. His legacy as one of the greatest players in NHL history is already secure.
But one thing is missing. The Stanley Cup.
At this stage of his career, championships matter more than personal accolades. McDavid has repeatedly shown that individual statistics mean very little if they do not translate into team success. That’s why the next couple of seasons are so important.
The Oilers don’t necessarily have to win the Stanley Cup immediately, but they must continue proving that they are legitimate contenders. Deep playoff runs, roster improvements, and a clear path toward sustained success will all factor into McDavid’s long-term decision.
If Edmonton starts slipping backward or fails to remain among the NHL’s elite teams, questions about his future will only intensify.
Winning a Cup Changes Everything
Perhaps the biggest factor in all of this is simple. Winning solves almost every problem. If the Oilers manage to capture a Stanley Cup over the next few years, the conversation surrounding McDavid’s future changes dramatically. A championship would validate years of work, sacrifice, and commitment from both players and management.
It would also further cement McDavid’s legacy in Edmonton. Players who win championships often become even more attached to the organizations where those memories are created. For McDavid, lifting the Stanley Cup in Edmonton would instantly place him alongside Oilers legends such as Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Jari Kurri, and Glenn Anderson. A seven-year extension would suddenly become far easier to envision.
Leon Draisaitl’s Presence Cannot Be Overlooked
Another reason for optimism is the relationship between McDavid and Draisaitl. The two stars have grown together throughout their careers and have built incredible chemistry on and off the ice. Their partnership has helped transform the Oilers from a rebuilding franchise into a perennial contender.
Keeping one superstar often helps keep the other. If Draisaitl remains committed to Edmonton and the organization continues showing both players that winning remains the priority, there is every reason to believe McDavid could envision spending the rest of his prime years with the Oilers.
The Pressure Is Now on Management
Ultimately, the responsibility shifts back to the front office. Stan Bowman and the Oilers’ leadership group understand what is at stake. Every decision moving forward will be scrutinized through the lens of maximizing the championship window surrounding McDavid and Draisaitl.
The goal can no longer be simply making the playoffs. The expectation is winning the Stanley Cup. That means continuing to improve the roster, finding secondary scoring, strengthening the blue line, and ensuring Edmonton remains among the NHL’s elite teams year after year.
McDavid and Draisaitl have shown tremendous loyalty to the franchise. Now the organization must reward that loyalty.
A Reason for Optimism, But Not Certainty
For Oilers fans, Stauffer’s comments should provide reassurance. Everything McDavid has said over the years points toward a player who genuinely wants to win in Edmonton. The same can be said for Draisaitl.
But championships ultimately drive decisions in professional sports. The Oilers have built a contender. Now they must prove they can finish the job.
If they do, the possibility of seeing McDavid sign another long-term extension becomes far more realistic — and perhaps the greatest player of his generation will continue chasing championships exactly where he always hoped to win them.
