It’s been a long time since the Buffalo Sabres were buyers at the trade deadline, and even longer since management traded for a player who could make an immediate impact. That’s why it has been fantastic to watch Sam Carrick‘s success since he arrived in Buffalo on March 6. The Sabres had plenty of scoring up front but needed some physicality, good, hard-working play in the bottom six, and some faceoff wins. That is exactly what Carrick has done for the team, and they need him to stay hot.
Carrick Before Coming to Buffalo
Before he was traded (for a 2026 third-round pick and a 2026 sixth-round pick), Carrick was playing a similar role on the New York Rangers as a bottom-six, physical, shutdown forward. In 60 games this season, he scored four goals and 10 points, had 86 hits, and had a 54% success rate on faceoffs. In New York, he was doing exactly what he needed to, but he did not stand out as anything more than one of the better defensive forwards on an otherwise shaky defensive team.
Until now, Carrick has had a storied career as a consistent fourth-line player. In 388 career games, he has 43 goals, 89 points, and a career faceoff percentage of just over 52%. Carrick knows what it means to be a role player. He plays his part, and he does it well, and he now brings that to a Sabres team with an identity that matches his work ethic.
Carrick as a Member of the Sabres
In Buffalo, Carrick has fit in like a glove. Slotting in on their fourth line between Beck Malenstyn and either Peyton Krebs or Zach Benson, he has strong puck possession skills, forechecks like an animal, and has meshed perfectly with his linemates. That kind of chemistry has translated to five goals and six points in eight games, including a plus-4 rating, winning 57% of his draws, and having a ridiculous 38.5% shooting percentage. Is that last stat sustainable? No. But it is a testament to how much he is being rewarded for his stellar play, willingness to shoot the puck and go to the net.
With Carrick at center, he has changed the look of the fourth line. Sure, it had a good spark with Malenstyn on it, but adding Carrick’s skills and experience to a tough and gritty line has made the others much more intense. They have been like a line of honey badgers, endlessly fighting for pucks, hounding opponents, and being an overall menace. His energy is infectious, and the results are undeniable.
Sabres Need Carrick To Have Long-Term Effect
Carrick is 34, so signing him long-term is not realistic. He is under contract for the rest of this season and next season, and his value will come from the lessons and habits he can pass along to other Sabres. The team has a couple of players who fill similar roles, like Krebs, Tyson Kozak and even Josh Dunne, and he can help mentor them during his time with the team.

Hard work, grit, determination, team play, and even the ability to win faceoffs are all traits that can be taught. If he can rub off some of that faceoff prowess to Tage Thompson, Ryan McLeod and even Josh Norris, the Sabres will have a great center core on their hands. Carrick has been the perfect role player since he arrived, and as the team continues to press on towards the playoffs, he will only become more valuable. He looks unstoppable out there, and that is a wonderful thing for the Sabres.
