It was a massive weekend for the scouting department. From overtime thrillers in the Western Hockey League (WHL) to a major professional signing in the collegiate ranks, here is how the next wave of Flames talent is performing right now.
Jonathan Castagna Turns Pro With Entry-Level Deal
The biggest news of the week came off the ice on Monday afternoon. The Flames officially signed center Jonathan Castagna to a three-year, entry-level contract. Acquired from the Utah Mammoth in the MacKenzie Weegar trade earlier this month, Castagna wasted no time proving his worth. The 20-year-old led Cornell University with 15 goals and 34 points in 34 games this season.
While Cornell’s tournament run ended at the hands of Denver, Castagna’s collegiate career finishes on a high note. He is currently dealing with a minor lower-body injury, but once cleared, he is expected to join the American Hockey League’s Calgary Wranglers on an amateur tryout for the remainder of the spring. Collegiate Standouts Punch Frozen Four Tickets
The NCAA tournament often serves as a litmus test for North American prospects, and several Flames draftees have passed with flying colours. University of North Dakota has secured its spot in the Frozen Four after a dominant Regional performance.
Cole Reschny, the NCHC Rookie of the Year and a 2025 first-round pick, has been the engine for North Dakota. After leading all conference freshmen in scoring during the regular season, Reschny extended his point streak to 10 games during the Sioux Falls Regional. He capped off the weekend with a goal in a 5-0 win over Quinnipiac, showcasing the professional-grade poise that suggests he is ahead of schedule in his development.
Reschny isn’t the only Flame making noise in Grand Forks. Defenceman Abram Wiebe has evolved into a top-four pillar for the Hawks. Wiebe was a force in the Regional Final, picking up two assists — one of which came after a tenacious puck battle that led to the team’s third goal. On the other side of that matchup, fifth-round gem Ethan Wyttenbach saw his record-breaking season come to an end. Despite the loss to North Dakota, Wyttenbach’s 25 goals and 34 assists have made him a frontrunner for the Hobey Baker Award.
In the Denver Regional, defenceman Eric Jamieson helped the Pioneers punch their ticket to the Frozen Four. Jamieson recorded an assist in Denver’s 5-0 shutout of Cornell and has been a steadying force on a blue line that has gone 14 games without a loss.
Hunter Laing & Axel Hurtig Battle Through Overtime Thrillers
In the WHL, the opening round has been defined by extra time. Hunter Laing and the Saskatoon Blades find themselves in a dogfight with the Edmonton Oil Kings. After Laing scored a historic penalty-shot goal to win Game 1, the Blades fell 4-3 in overtime during Sunday’s Game 2. The series is now tied 1-1 as it shifts back to Saskatoon.
Meanwhile, the Calgary Hitmen have taken a commanding 2-0 series lead over the Brandon Wheat Kings. Following a triple-overtime marathon on Friday, the Hitmen secured another OT victory on Sunday, winning 6-5. Hitmen captain and Flames defensive prospect Axel Hurtig has been a true workhorse. The Medicine Hat Tigers are locked in a heated opening-round split with the Regina Pats, and Andrew Basha is right at the center of the action. Since returning from a 27-game stint with the Wranglers, Basha has been a scoring machine in the junior ranks.
He finished the regular season with a staggering 50 points in just 32 games (1.56 points-per-game). That momentum has carried into the postseason; through the first two games of the playoffs, he has three assists. In Game 1’s 6-2 victory, Basha recorded two assists and was a constant threat on the power play. While the Tigers fell 4-2 in Game 2 on Saturday, Basha’s high-end speed and vision have established him as a player who has clearly outgrown the WHL level.
