Rankings

While all the attention is garnered by Ivar Stenberg, Viggo Bjorck and other top Swedish prospects that are slated to go in the first round, there are still plenty of interesting and high upside players outside of that first round. Leksands IF U20’s Jonas Lagerberg Hoen has quickly risen up draft boards and could be a name that could genuinely surprise in June.

Lagerberg Hoen absolutely torched the U20 Nationell last season as he scored a whopping 27 goals in 38 games with 30 points. That alone put him in a tie with Bjorck and one more than Stenberg. He was off to a great start this season as he was a goal per game with nine and had 16 points, while also seeing some games in the SHL. However, he has missed the rest of the season as he suffered a knee injury and required surgery, per McKeen’s Hockey Felix Robbins. If he wasn’t injured, you can bet he would still be productive and he would’ve played a role for Sweden at the World U18 Championship.

The Hockey Writers 2026 NHL Entry Draft Guide (The Hockey Writers)

In case you couldn’t tell from his goals scored, Lagerberg Hoen is a high volume and quality shooter as it is his best attribute. He has a tremendous release and accuracy and does a great job to instantly find those shooting lanes and opportunities. Even if he doesn’t have control of the puck, he has a great sense to find open ice and get into position to tee up a powerful one timer or get a quick snap shot off. He has tremendous speed and puck protection skills to find and attack the middle and challenge defenders and beat goalies easily. He may not have the smoothest of hands and he can work on his puck control, but he does a decent job to find his teammates and set them up.

While he still needs to learn to be a little meaner given his frame, he needs to add some strength, he can show that he can play a heavy game; winning puck battles and playing with an edge at times. He provides great pressure on puck carriers and is always giving defenders fits with his compete and drive. He’s extremely dangerous on the rush as he’s a smooth and powerful skater, being able to cut through defenders or quickly go to the outside and cut back in. When he generates that speed, he takes off and is difficult to stop. He has strong edges and a great burst of speed when coming out of the corners.

Lagerberg Hoen is also responsible without the puck. He doesn’t cheat on exits to try and stretch the play or on a breakout. Instead of playing up high in the defensive zone, he’s always patrolling the middle to lower part of the ice to take away any dangerous opportunity and he’s always first to pucks to make sure his team regains possession and regroup to set up a play. He has active stick to disrupt and break up plays and he displays a never quit mindset whether he has possession or not.

Jonas Lagerberg Hoen- NHL Draft Projection

While Lagerberg Hoen may be on the outside looking in for the first-round, he definitely has the size, skill and shot of one. He’s an underrated name coming out of Sweden and if he had played more games, that could’ve boost his stock a little more. However, given his offensive skillset, he definitely is a strong contender as a second-round pick. He’s an early second for me but even if he falls towards the later part of the round, he’s great value to be had.

Quotables

“Lagerberg Hoen has a great reach, soft hands, and quick reactions when he’s transitioning onto the puck. He is a danger any time he is in the O-zone, even if his team doesn’t control possession. A snappy shot and keen playmaking awareness have helped Lagerberg Hoen reach a goal-per-game mark in Swedish juniors.” – Gabe Foley, Recruit Scouting

“His shot is a big weapon – especially on the powerplay. He’s consistently able to get a high volume of shots off, and from dangerous areas. He can create chances off the rush with good speed, he can dangle and handle the puck well, and he can use his size well in puck battles.” – Brian S, Pension Plan Puppets

  • High volume and heavy shooter
  • Great smarts, awareness and positioning
  • Excellent speed and agility for his size
  • Offensive generator

NHL Potential

Lagerberg Hoen definitely fits the bill of a high scoring, power forward winger. If he can add more strength and continue to use that to his advantage, he can definitely be a solid middle-six contributor on any team. He has the goal scoring sense and shot that makes him a threat at five-on-five and on the power play. Even if the goals don’t come as much as they did at the junior level, he can still be an impactful player overall.
