Red Wings Acquire Faulk From Blues for First and Third-Round Pick – The Hockey Writers – Trade Deadline

by Marcelo Moreira

The Detroit Red Wings have acquired defenseman Justin Faulk from the St. Louis Blues. In exchange, the Blues are receiving a first- and third-round pick. St. Louis also received right-shot defenseman Justin Holl and prospect Dmitri Buchelnikov.

Red Wings Acquire Offensive-Minded Defenseman

Faulk was enjoying a nice offensive season for the Blues. He was among the team leaders in goals and points. He has an outside chance to reach the 50-point mark for the first time since the 2022-23 season.

The Red Wings are acquiring Faulk to give them an offensive weapon on the blue line. Even at 33 years old, he is still a strong skater who handles the puck well. Defense is not his strongest asset, but his offensive performance this season has helped balance that out. Thankfully for the Red Wings, they have other defensemen who can help cover that part of the ice. Faulk is truly a piece of what Detroit hopes is a Cup-contending puzzle.

An added benefit to this trade is Faulk’s contract, which he signed when he joined the Blues prior to the 2019-20 season and goes through the 2026-27 season. So, the Red Wings will retain his services beyond this season.

Faulk Era Ends in St. Louis

Faulk’s arrival in St. Louis came as the organization was looking to build a team capable of winning a second straight Stanley Cup. However, many were surprised at the acquisition and subsequent extension given the team’s cap situation and then-captain Alex Pietrangelo being in the last year of his contract.

Pietrangelo’s eventual departure and the Blues’ transition into a retool certainly make Faulk’s reputation in St. Louis interesting. He had some good seasons, including a 16-goal campaign in 2021-22. However, he was not strong defensively and was sidelined with injuries at various points in his Blues’ tenure.

On the bright side, Faulk made his last season with the Blues good enough to warrant a nice return in a trade.

Blues’ Defensive Core Changes

With Faulk now out of the equation, the Blues will reshuffle their defensive pairings. Logan Mailloux is likely to get the majority of the time in Faulk’s spot. This will give the youngster increased minutes each game as well as power-play opportunities. This could also open up an opportunity for prospect Adam Jiricek to get some NHL time, but Mailloux is likely to get the majority of the time in Faulk’s role.

Faulk Seeking First Cup

Faulk joins a Detroit team with Stanley Cup aspirations. For the 33-year-old, this could be the best chance he has had to reach the Stanley Cup Final since the Carolina Hurricanes reached the Eastern Conference Final in 2019.

His offensive abilities can help create a crucial goal for the Red Wings during the playoffs. Perhaps he can make a mark with his new team on the big stage.
