Here is the latest news and updates around the Buffalo Sabres and their schedule for the week of Jan. 26 – Feb. 2, 2026.
Enter the Week Third in the Atlantic Division
The Buffalo Sabres have been the hottest team in the NHL over the last two months. They are now 18-3-1 over their last 22 games, which dates back to Dec. 9, 2025. They now sit with a 29-17-7 (63 points) record, the best they have had through 51 games since the 2010-11 season.
After the Montreal Canadiens’ 4-3 loss in regulation on Saturday, the Sabres now sit in sole possession of third place in the Atlantic Division. The Sabres have one game in hand on the Canadiens and have the tiebreaker, which is regulation wins. The Sabres have 23 while the Canadiens have 18.
Josh Doan Signs Long-Term Extension
The Sabres and Josh Doan have agreed to a seven-year contract extension with an annual average value of $6.95 million. Doan, acquired in the offseason from the Utah Mammoth, has been excellent for the Sabres, recording 15 goals and 20 assists for 35 points (all career highs) in 51 games played.
Alex Lyon Ties Sabres Franchise Record for Most Consecutive Wins
Above, I mentioned the Sabres are the hottest team in the NHL. Well, Sabres goaltender Alex Lyon has been a key contributor. He’s missed some time recently due to an injury, but he returned to action on Saturday and pitched a 5-0 shutout against the New York Islanders.
With the win, Lyon has tied Gerry Desjardins for the franchise record of nine consecutive wins, which was set all the way back in December of 1976. Lyon has a chance to do what no other goaltender has ever done in franchise history in his next start, and that is to win his 10th straight game.
