Tampa Bay Lightning Week Ahead: Schedule & Storylines – Perry Returns, Injuries Continue, Chaotic Loss and More – The Hockey Writers – Tampa Bay Lightning

by Marcelo Moreira

You can certainly see why Tampa Bay Lightning fans are buzzing right now. Between an incredibly dramatic weekend and some familiar faces returning, there is a lot to catch up on. Here are the key storylines and upcoming schedule for the week of March 9-16, 2026.

The Return of Corey Perry

The biggest roster news is that the Lightning reacquired veteran forward Corey Perry from the Los Angeles Kings on trade deadline day (March 6). General Manager Julien BriseBois traded a 2028 second-round pick to bring back the 40-year-old, who previously helped the team reach the 2021-22 Stanley Cup Final. Perry is already making an impact, scoring a goal in his first and second games back.

A Wild 8-7 Loss to Buffalo

The Lightning are coming off an absolutely chaotic 8-7 loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday, March 8. The game was a direct battle for first place in the Atlantic Division.

Tampa Bay erased an early 4-1 deficit by scoring five unanswered goals to take a 6-4 lead, only to eventually lose to a late Sabres power-play goal. Nikita Kucherov, JJ Moser, and Darren Raddysh led the team with three points each in the high-scoring affair.

Battling for the Atlantic Division

Despite a recent rut that included a four-game losing streak in early March, the Lightning are hovering right at the top of the Atlantic Division. They are in a tight race with the surging Buffalo Sabres, and securing division points will be the primary narrative for the remainder of the month.

Roster Updates & Injuries

Energetic rookie Dominic James recently suffered an injury and is expected to be out for 8-10 weeks. Defenseman Emil Lilleberg suffered a facial fracture during practice while the team was in Minnesota on Wednesday. He’s expected to miss close to two weeks. Additionally, the team placed Curtis Douglas on waivers to make room for deadline adjustments, and he was claimed by the Vancouver Canucks.

Lightning Upcoming Schedule

The outlook for the next seven days is favorable for Tampa Bay. After a grueling road trip and an emotionally taxing, defense-optional battle in Buffalo, the Lightning are heading back to Florida for a three-game homestand. All of their games this week will be played at Benchmark International Arena against Eastern Conference opponents. This stretch provides a crucial opportunity for Coach Jon Cooper’s squad to tighten up their defensive structure, reset their goaltending, and rack up points in front of a home crowd.
