The Masterton is awarded annually to the NHL player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to ice hockey. The other two finalists are Buffalo Sabres defenseman Rasmus Dahlin and Colorado Avalanche forward Gabriel Landeskog.

The now-38-year-old three-time Stanley Cup winner Toews returned to professional hockey this season after missing the two previous campaigns with long COVID and Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome. He played a bottom-six role for his hometown Jets while also drawing time on the power play and recorded 11 goals and 18 assists for 29 points in 82 games.

Toews is a pending unrestricted free agent and in his exit interview, was non-committal on whether he would continue to play or retire.

Toews was named the Jets’ nominee early April. The local chapters of the Professional Hockey Writers Association submitted nominations for the Masterton at the nd of the regular season and the top three vote-getters were designated as finalists, as per the NHL.
