3 Takeaways From New York Sirens’ 1-0 OT Win Over Toronto Sceptres – The Hockey Writers – PWHL

by Syndicated News

On Tuesday, April 21, the New York Sirens faced off against the Toronto Sceptres for the last time of the 2025-26 Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) season. Heading into this game, the Sirens had two wins under their belt in the season series while the Sceptres had one.

After 60 minutes of game time, there was no score. The Sceptres had three penalties while the Sirens had two. Neither team could score on the power play or at full strength. In three-on-three overtime, the Sirens scored to take the 1-0 win.

Sirens Made an Attempt to Get on the Board

Fifteen minutes into the first period, the Sirens scored, but the goal was called back for goaltender interference. Maja Nylen Persson fired a shot from the blue line with 20 seconds remaining on the power play. The puck found the back of the net, but the referees immediately waved the goal off. The goal went to review, and because the central control room found that Sarah Fillier skated into the back of Raygan Kirk’s skate, the call on the ice stood, and there was no goal.

The video review was not due to a coach’s challenge, but the league decided the goal was going to go to a video review. The PWHL eliminated the coach’s challenge at the beginning of the season. The only ones who can request a video review are the referees or the Central Situation Room.

If the coach’s challenge was still in place, there might have been a different result in this game. Kirk was slightly out of the crease, so Troy Ryan might not have challenged. We can discuss the what-if’s all day, but the fact of the matter is that the Sirens scored the first and only goal in 60 minutes, and it was waved off.

Simpson Ended the Scoreless Game

After a (technically) scoreless 60 minutes, the Sirens managed to close out the game with a win. Casey O’Brien had the puck by the boards and dished a pass down to Allyson Simpson. She took a shot and scored the game-winning goal.

This goal was the third one for the defender this season. She has tied her previous career-high points total with five. Simpson has been a major part of the Sirens’ defensive corps this season, but she has also been finding her scoring edge. She has certainly leveled up her play style this season.

Sirens Eliminated From Playoff Contention

For the third straight season, the Sirens have been eliminated from playoff contention. They are the only original six team to not make the postseason. This was a tough break for New York, especially since they were sitting in a playoff spot before the Olympic break.

Since the Sirens have been eliminated, they are now competing for the Gold Plan, the PWHL’s draft system. Once a team is eliminated, every point they earn gets converted into a Gold Plan point, and whichever team has the most points by the end of the season earns the first overall draft pick. The two expansion teams, the Seattle Torrent and the Vancouver Goldeneyes, have both been eliminated and are competing for the first overall draft pick as well.

Seattle has one Gold Plan point, while the Goldeneyes just picked up three with their regulation win over the Montreal Victoire last night. Seattle still has two more games this season, while the Goldeneyes and the Sirens only have one more. The Torrent have the opportunity to get more Gold Plan points, with the possibility of six more. The Goldeneyes can only get three more. And the Sirens can only pick up three total this season.

The stakes are high, and everything is riding on the Sirens’ last game of the season.

Sirens’ Last Game of the Season on Saturday

The Sirens will play their last game of the 2025-26 PWHL season on Saturday, April 25, when they take on the Boston Fleet at 12 PM ET.
