Rankings
Ossi Tukio grew up inside a Liiga dressing room. His father, Arto Tukio, spent the better part of two decades as a professional defenseman in Finland and Sweden, logging roughly 500 games across the Finnish Liiga, stints with Jokerit and Ilves, and two seasons with Frölunda HC in Sweden’s top league, the Swedish Hockey League (SHL), where he won a Swedish championship in 2005. Arto was drafted 101st overall by the New York Islanders in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft but never crossed the Atlantic. He eventually returned to Ilves and finished his career in Tampere, the same city where Ossi was born and where Ossi now captains Ilves’ U20 squad.
The Tukio name carries weight in Tampere hockey circles, and Ossi has not treated it as a free pass. He has earned every opportunity, rising through the Ilves development system from the U16 and U18 levels to become the team captain of the U20 SM-sarja club while also earning callups to the Liiga and Champions Hockey League rosters.
At 6-foot-2, 187 pounds, Tukio is classified as an offensive defenseman by Elite Prospects, and his production supports the tag. In 19 U20 SM-sarja regular-season games in 2025-26, he recorded nine goals and 16 assists for 25 points. That is 1.32 points per game from the blue line, a significant jump from the 14 points in 33 games he produced the season prior. In four playoff games, he added another goal and three assists. Nine goals from a defenseman in 19 U20 regular-season games is a rate that draws attention regardless of the league.
The offensive instincts are his calling card. Tukio processes the blue line well, identifying when to activate and when to stay home. His shot selection from the point is above average for his age group. He can find shooting lanes through traffic, and his willingness to jump into the rush gives his team an extra layer of offensive pressure that creates mismatches for opposing penalty kills and defensive structures. His skating, while not explosive, is smooth enough to allow him to recover when he pinches aggressively.
Tukio’s Liiga exposure remains limited but meaningful. He appeared in three Liiga games during the 2024-25 season and added one more in 2025-26, recording an assist. He also dressed for three Champions Hockey League games with Ilves’ senior roster. These are small samples, but they indicate that the Ilves coaching staff trusts him in professional settings. That trust is not handed out casually in Finnish hockey, where Liiga teams are notoriously cautious about giving ice time to draft-eligible juniors.
Internationally, Tukio has represented Finland at the U16 and U17 levels, including the 2023 World Hockey Challenge U17 tournament, and suited up for Finland’s U20 team in pre-tournament friendlies during the 2025-26 season. His international resume is not as deep as some Finnish prospects in this class, which may reflect the depth of Finland’s defensive pipeline more than any shortcoming in Tukio’s game.
Where evaluators will push back is on the defensive side. His positioning in his own zone can be inconsistent, and against faster, more skilled opponents at the Liiga level or above, the gaps in his defensive reads become more visible. He can get caught out of structure when his offensive instincts pull him up ice at the wrong moment. At 187 pounds, he also needs to add strength to hold his ground in board battles against heavier, more physical forwards. These are common development checkboxes for a draft-year defenseman, not disqualifying flaws, but the gap between U20 production and Liiga readiness is real.
Ossi Tukio – NHL Draft Projection
Tukio projects as a fourth-to-sixth round selection. His NHL Central Scouting ranking of 45th among EU skaters puts him in the conversation, and his offensive production from the blue line at the U20 level is difficult to ignore. The pedigree helps, too. Having a father who was drafted by an NHL team, played at a high European level, and built a long career on both sides of the puck provides Ossi with a development roadmap few prospects have. A team that selects him is betting on the offensive instincts continuing to translate as the competition gets faster, and on the physical maturity that should come with age and a professional training environment.
Quotables
“Steady defenseman with good positioning and stick work in defensive zone.” – LivingHockey draft profile
Strengths
- Strong offensive production from the blue line (nine goals in 19 U20 SM-sarja regular-season games)
- Good size at 6-foot-2 with room to add weight and fill out his frame
- Smooth skating with the ability to join the rush and recover
- Quality shot from the point with the ability to find shooting lanes through traffic
- Leadership qualities demonstrated as captain of Ilves U20
- Already has Liiga and Champions Hockey League experience at age 17 and 18
Under Construction – Needs Improvement
- Defensive positioning can be inconsistent, particularly when his offensive instincts override his structure
- Needs to add strength to compete physically in board battles against heavier, more experienced forwards
- Limited international tournament experience compared to other Finnish prospects in this class
- Liiga sample size remains small (four career games); production at the next level is unproven
NHL Potential
Tukio’s ceiling is tied directly to how well his offensive game translates as the competition scales up. His shot, his ability to read the play from the blue line, and his willingness to activate give him tools that not every defenseman in this draft class possesses. The development path is clear: earn full-time Liiga minutes next season, prove the offensive game holds at that level, and add the physical strength that a professional career demands. His father’s career arc (drafted, played top-level European hockey but never reached the NHL) is both a template and a cautionary tale. Ossi has the advantage of height his father did not, plus the benefit of growing up around a player who understood exactly what the path requires.
