Rankings
Viljo Kähkönen was one of the most talked-about Finnish forwards in his age group two years ago. A product of Helsinki’s Helsingin Jääkiekkoklubi (HJK) youth system before moving to Helsingin IFK (HIFK), Kähkönen earned national attention for his early production at levels well above his age. He was playing in the Under-18 SM-sarja at 14, putting up a point-per-game pace and drawing statistical comparisons to the development timelines of Patrik Laine and Jesse Puljujärvi at the same stage. In May 2024, HIFK signed him to a three-year Liiga contract through spring 2027, a vote of confidence from one of Finnish hockey’s most historic organizations.
The 2025-26 season has been one of recalibration. Kähkönen spent the majority of the campaign with HIFK’s U20 squad in the U20 SM-sarja, posting six goals and 13 assists for 19 points in 24 games, a 0.79 points-per-game pace. The assist-heavy stat line reflects who Kähkönen is right now: a center who distributes first and whose playmaking vision remains his best offensive trait. He made his Liiga debut on Nov. 21, 2025, at 17 years old, slotting in on the fourth line as a right winger alongside Otto Somppi against Hämeenlinnan Pallokerho (HPK) in Hämeenlinna. He appeared in three Liiga games total this season, registering one assist and getting his first taste of Finland’s top professional league.
Kähkönen’s international resume is deeper than most prospects at his ranking range. He represented Finland at the 2024 Youth Olympic Games in Gangwon, South Korea, where he served as alternate captain and led the team in scoring with five points (two goals, three assists) en route to a bronze medal. He captained Finland’s entry at the 2024 World U-17 Hockey Challenge and was selected for the Under-18 Hlinka Gretzky Cup in 2025. Across 42 international appearances at the boys’ level, he has consistently been trusted with leadership roles, serving as alternate captain for Finland at the U17, U18, and U20 levels. That track record of national-team inclusion, even as his club production has levelled off, tells you something about how Finnish Hockey Association coaches view his game intelligence and reliability.
The scouting conversation has nonetheless shifted over the past year. At 15 and 16, HIFK’s director of player development, Kari Kalto, described Kähkönen as one of the most promising attackers in his age group, calling him a fearless, skilled, and versatile center. He earned the alternate captaincy on HIFK’s U18 squad at 15, won a U16 SM championship, and took home U18 SM silver, all with the same organization. In the 2021-22 U16 SM-sarja playoffs, playing two full years below the age cutoff, he posted five goals and five assists in 10 games and shared HIFK’s internal goal-scoring lead with Aleksi Tuovinen and Edvard Grönholm.
Since the Pohjola Camp cycle and the transition into the U20 SM-sarja full-time, Kähkönen’s offensive growth has stalled relative to expectations. Finnish scouting observers have noted that his game and frame have not developed the spike that early precocity suggested. At 5-foot-10 and 181 pounds, he remains undersized against opponents who have physically matured around him. His offensive profile is tilted heavily toward playmaking, with limited shooting and goal-scoring threat. In the U20 SM-sarja, that was enough to produce at a 0.79 points-per-game clip. At the Liiga level, where he logged three games with a minus-4 rating and one assist, the gaps were more visible.

The HIFK development pipeline has produced NHL-level talent before, and Kähkönen’s path from HJK to HIFK’s U16, U18, and U20 programs tracks the traditional Finnish development ladder. His Liiga deal through 2027 means he will get a full opportunity to push for more senior minutes next season, and HIFK’s 2026-27 roster projection already includes him as a contracted forward. Head coach Olli Jokinen’s staff will be the one to determine how much of a runway Kähkönen gets.
The 2026 IIHF U18 World Championship in Trenčín and Bratislava, Slovakia (April 22 to May 2), offers one final pre-draft showcase. Kähkönen was included on Finland’s U18 camp roster, and if he earns a prominent role and produces in the tournament, it could shift perceptions before June.
Viljo Kähkönen, NHL Draft Projection
Kähkönen enters the draft as one of the more complex Finnish forward stories in the class. Early aggregate boards placed him as high as 21st overall in user-compiled rankings, and Finnish scouting communities rated him fourth among 2026-eligible Finns before the season. His 2025-26 production did not sustain that momentum. He received a C rating on NHL Central Scouting’s preliminary international watch list but did not appear in the midterm or final rankings. He does not currently show up on the major public boards from The Hockey Writers, The Hockey News, or The Athletic.
The realistic range is a late-round selection or undrafted. Teams that value center depth, two-way habits, and Finnish-system familiarity may see enough in the playmaking and defensive awareness to justify a sixth- or seventh-round pick. If the U18 Worlds go well, that case will strengthen. If not, the Liiga contract provides a clear runway for HIFK to develop him into a full-time senior player, and the 2027 re-entry draft would remain available if an NHL club sees enough growth over the next 12 months.
Quotables
“Ikäluokkansa lupaavimpia hyökkääjiä. Ennakkoluuloton, taitava ja monipuolinen sentteri.” (Translation: One of the most promising attackers in his age group. A fearless, skilled, and versatile center.) – Kari Kalto, HIFK Director of Player Development, HIFK.fi, June 2024
Strengths
- Strong two-way awareness and defensive responsibility for a teenage forward
- Playmaking vision and the ability to distribute under pressure and in traffic
- Extensive international pedigree (42 caps, alternate captain at U17, U18, and U20 levels)
- Finnish-system discipline: positional, structured, and coachable
- Liiga contract in hand through 2027, providing a clear development runway with a storied organization
Under Construction, Improvements to Make
- Shot mechanics and finishing ability lag behind the playmaking; limited goal-scoring threat at higher levels
- Frame (5-foot-10, 181 pounds) has not added significant size since his U16 breakout seasons
- Offensive production has plateaued relative to the expectations set during his early junior career
- Pace of play needs to increase to create separation and earn consistent Liiga minutes
NHL Potential
Kähkönen profiles as a long-term project whose path to the NHL depends on whether he can add an offensive dimension to a game that is already structurally sound. The defensive habits and two-way awareness are ahead of schedule for his age. If his shot develops and his frame fills out over the next two to three seasons in Liiga, there is a bottom-six center ceiling with penalty kill utility.
The playmaking instincts are real, but they need either a finishing touch or a physical element before the NHL translation becomes plausible. HIFK’s investment suggests they believe the tools are present. The 2026-27 Liiga season, his first full season with a real shot at regular senior minutes, will be the proving ground.
